Spray Pro Insulation creates an air-tight seal to lower a home’s energy costs. It is a popular choice for new construction and existing homes. However, improper installation can lead to future problems such as gaps in the foam or mold issues. Hiring a skilled professional is the best way to ensure that the insulation is installed correctly. Spray foam expands quickly as it dries, so contractors must be quick and accurate in applying it. They will also be able to fill in any cracks and crevices that are not visible under normal conditions.

What is Spray Foam Insulation Made From?
The main ingredient in spray foam is polyurethane, a type of plastic. The process is based on a chemical reaction between two liquid components that are kept in separate containers, commonly referred to as the “A” side and the “B” side. The chemicals are sprayed together with a specialized gun. As the mixture dries, it expands to several times its original size, filling in any cracks and voids to create an effective air and vapor barrier.
Both open and closed-cell spray foam have excellent insulating properties, but the two differ in their internal structure. Open-cell spray foam contains small pockets that aren’t completely encapsulated, which makes it softer and more flexible. It also uses water or carbon dioxide as a propellant, which means it doesn’t off-gas as much as the closed-cell alternative.
Closed-cell spray foam contains a blend of polyols derived from natural renewable oils and post-consumer recycled plastics. Its R-value is slightly higher than that of open-cell spray foam, and it can be used in walls, ceilings and roofs. This type of spray foam contains a high amount of volatile organic compounds, which off-gas for 1-3 days after application. Because of the odors involved, homeowners should stay out of the house during this time and afterward until the material has finished curing.
